When to plant flowers

When the weather is milder and the soil has a good moisture content, spring is the best time to plant flowers. If you live somewhere cold, planting flowers should be done before the first frost. The ideal temperature indoors for plants is around 60°F.

Which layout is best for vegetable gardens?

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
