FAQ

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! Yes! Ensure your pot has drainage holes so excess moisture won't rot the tree. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

How long can an indoor plant be kept alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. However, it's important to repot your plant every few months to help promote new growth. Repotting is easy. All you have to do is remove the soil and put in fresh compost.

How do you prepare the soil?

Preparing soil is simple for a vegetable garden. First, get rid of all weeds. Add organic matter such as leaves, composted manure or grass clippings, straw, wood chips, and then water. Finally, water well and wait until plants sprout.

How can I find out what type of soil my house has?

It is easy to tell the difference by the color of your dirt. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. A second option is soil testing. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants need 12 hours per day of direct sunlight. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Most vegetables need 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

Which type of lighting is best for indoor plants?

Because they emit less heat, floralescent lights are great for indoor gardening. They also provide consistent lighting without flickering or dimming. There are two types of fluorescent bulbs: regular and compact fluorescent (CFL). CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

What is the difference in hydroponics and aquaponics?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
