FAQ

What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. It's like having a farm right in your backyard.

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

If you don’t yet have a vegetable gardening, you might wonder if it will be possible. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You will still get plenty of produce regardless of how you do it.

How much light does a tree need?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Others prefer 8 hours of indirect sunlight. Most vegetables need at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour time period.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

Planting vegetables in April and June is the best time. This is the best time to plant vegetables. The soil is warmer and plants grow faster. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to wait until July or August.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

Which seeds can be planted indoors?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. Plant tomatoes in pots and be careful about putting them in the ground. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
