How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
