FAQ

What length of time can I keep an indoor flower alive?

Indoor plants can last for many years. To promote new growth, it is essential to repot your indoor plants every few month. Repotting is simple. Just remove the old soil, and then add fresh compost.

Can I grow fruit trees inside pots?

Yes! If space is limited, you can grow fruit trees in pots. Make sure your pot is drained to prevent the tree from getting rotted by excess moisture. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
