FAQ

What is the minimum space required to grow vegetables?

A good rule is that 1 square foot of soil needs 1/2 pound. Therefore, 100 pounds of seeds is required for a surface of 10 feet x 10 feet (3 m x 3 m).

How can you prepare the soil to grow vegetables in your garden?

Preparing soil for a vegetable garden is easy. First, you should remove all weeds around the area where you want to plant vegetables. After that, add organic material such as composted soil, leaves, grass clips, straw or wood chips. Let the plants grow by watering well.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

Which month is the best to start a vegetable gardening?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when soil is at its warmest and plants are growing the fastest. You might want to wait until July/August if you live in a cold area.

Which seeds should start indoors?

Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
