How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
