FAQ

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on the plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 hours of indirect sunlight. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. Yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It's all about planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. You could also use containers to replace raised beds. You will still get plenty of produce regardless of how you do it.

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes grow quickly and bear good fruit all year. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. The pots should be covered with clear plastic wrap. Germination usually takes about 10 days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. Once the danger of frost is over, cover the plants with a thick mulch layer. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
