How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
