FAQ

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

It's possible to wonder if you will have enough space for a vegetable or fruit garden if your current one is not available. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It's all about planning. You could make raised beds that are only 6 inches tall. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You will still get plenty of produce regardless of how you do it.

What length of time can I keep an indoor flower alive?

Indoor plants can survive up to ten years. It is vital to repot your plants every few months in order to encourage new growth. Repotting is simple. Just remove the old soil, and then add fresh compost.

What is the best vegetable garden layout?

The location of your home will dictate the layout of your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. If you live in a rural location, you will need to space your plants out for maximum yield.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

What equipment do I need to grow vegetables?

Not really. All you need to do is use a shovel, trowels, watering containers, and maybe even a rake.

What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil to feed plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

Can I grow fruit tree in a pot?

Yes! Yes! Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
