How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
