How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds must be planted at the latest two weeks before last frost. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. Place the pots in clear plastic wrap. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Germination takes approximately ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in a sunny window or in indirect light. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can then be dried on paper towels, screens, or other suitable surfaces. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
