How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
