FAQ

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on the plant. Some plants need 12 hours per day of direct sunlight. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. A second option is soil testing. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

It is best to plant vegetables between April and June. This is when soil is at its warmest and plants are growing the fastest. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to wait until July or August.

When to plant flowers?

When the weather is milder and the soil has a good moisture content, spring is the best time to plant flowers. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature indoors for plants is around 60°F.

Which seeds can be planted indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
