FAQ

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes grow quickly and bear good fruit all year. You should be cautious when putting tomatoes into pots. The soil could dry out if you plant too early. This could lead to root rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

What type of lighting is best to grow plants indoors?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They provide constant lighting that doesn't flicker or dimm. There are two types of fluorescent bulbs: regular and compact fluorescent (CFL). CFLs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

What's the best way to keep my indoor plant alive?

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
