How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
