How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
