How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
