How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
