How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
